St. Elizabeth’s Hospital (first) is established.

[1869-DimockTL] Founded by five laywomen who are members of the Order of St. Francis, it is located initially at 28 Hanson Street. Incorporated in 1872, its purpose is to provide care for poor and older women, many of whom worked as domestics. It cares for men beginning in 1882. The hospital moves to 78 Waltham Street (second), then to a larger building at 55 – 61 West Brookline Street (third)in 1885. A School of Nursing opens in 1895. The hospital moves to Brighton (fourth) in 1914.*
